Students from the School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT) proudly represented Kaimosi Friends University at the first-ever GreenTech Hackathon, hosted at Strathmore University and sponsored by Oracle.
The national event brought together bright and ambitious university innovators to showcase technology-driven solutions for a sustainable, greener future and KAFU’s team stood out brilliantly.
KAFU students share a moment of joy and relief immediately after delivering their innovative presentation at the GreenTech Hackathon.
The hackathon challenged participants to design, prototype, and pitch digital innovations that address urgent environmental issues such as energy efficiency, waste management, carbon tracking, and sustainable agriculture.
Competing against teams from top universities, KAFU’s delegation impressed the judges with their creativity, technical excellence, and teamwork, earning recognition for their strong problem-solving approach and commitment to real-world sustainability.
Their solution a smart, data-driven platform leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) sought to monitor energy usage and optimize consumption for institutions and households. The judges praised the project’s originality, scalability, and environmental relevance, awarding the team top honors among emerging tech universities.
Prof. Omieno, Dean of the School of Computing and Information Technology, poses with KAFU students after their outstanding performance at the GreenTech Hackathon held at Strathmore University.
“Our students demonstrated the power of innovation with purpose technology that not only solves problems but also protects our planet. They have proven that KAFU’s computing talents can compete and collaborate with the best minds nationally and internationally.” said Prof. Omieno the Dean, School of Computing and Information Technology.
Beyond the competition, the hackathon offered valuable learning experiences. Students engaged in mentorship sessions with Oracle engineers, participated in green entrepreneurship workshops, and networked with peers and industry leaders passionate about sustainability and digital transformation. The experience reaffirmed KAFU’s dedication to nurturing innovators who combine technical knowledge with environmental consciousness.
